Board of Director

The Rainbow Democrats Board of Directors stands united in strong opposition to the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which aims to ban discussion of LGBTQ+ people and families in “primary schools.” The Senate version of this harmful and discriminatory bill, SB 1834, is set to appear before the Senate Education Committee today, February 8th, at 9:00 AM EST. The House version, HB 1557, has already passed out of its first committee and is being fast-tracked by anti-LGBTQ+ Republican House leadership. The Rainbow Democrats Board of Directors urges all Orange County Senators and House Representatives to speak out against the “Don’t Say Gay” bill and VOTE NO if it appears before them in committee.

If this bill is signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis, schools will become a haven for antiLGBTQ+ bullying and discrimination. LGBTQ+ children will be targeted for discipline if they ever share who they are. Children with two dads, two moms, or one or more non-binary parents wouldn’t be able to include them in show-and-tell, Bring Your Parent to School Day, Career Day, or other family-inclusive events.

Both pieces of legislation are blatant attempts by anti-LGBTQ+ Republicans in Tallahassee to erase the next generation of LGBTQ+ children and build a purposefully unsafe state for our community. We cannot let this supremacist-style bill pass. To the LGBTQ+ community and our allies in Orange County, please call or email your State Elected Officials and urge them to vote down the “Don’t Say Gay” bill when it comes before them.
