ORLANDO, FL – Today, the Rainbow Democrats caucus have announced their endorsement in the race for State Attorney in the 9th Judicial Circuit. After a careful review of the candidates and statements, the membership of the Rainbow Democrats voted to endorse Monique Worrell.
Rainbow Democrats President Brandon Nelson issued the following statement on the Caucus’ endorsement:
“Our members reviewed the candidates for consideration for State Attorney of the 9th Judicial Circuit. One candidate was immediately removed from consideration because they revealed that they had made no effort throughout their career to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. Ultimately, it came down to which candidate would best serve our community by ensuring human rights are upheld and are for protecting those who are from marginalized communities.
When compared to the other candidates for State Attorney, Monique Worrell stood out as the most progressive candidate in the race, and the candidate most likely to protect LGBTQ+ residents and people who continue to be marginalized as indicated by her response to one of our questions below:
I have spent my entire legal career fighting for fairness, justice, equality, and equity for all people. I believe that no one should be subjected to hate crimes and speech under any circumstance, including on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. I want to lead our judicial system into a new era. One that has no room for gender/sexual orientation discrimination, while simultaneously looking to where history and our legal system have failed the LGBTQ+ community and actively work prevent further injustice and under-service of this community.
