ORLANDO, FL – Today, the Rainbow Democrats caucus have announced another round of endorsements just a few days before the August 18 primary election.

Rainbow Democrats President Brandon Nelson issued the following statement on the Caucus’ endorsements:

Each of these incumbent elected officials has demonstrated their strong commitment to the LGBTQ+ community, ensuring that they will continue to fight for us and focus on the issues concerning our community. In the era of Donald Trump, where he and his administration are making every attempt to systematically reverse the progress and gains that we’ve made towards equality, we need our allies more than ever. Each of these women believes in supporting our communities and ensuring that their constituents’ concerns are heard.

Dr. Karen Castor Dentel

School Board member Dr. Karen Castor Dentel is an outspoken advocate for the advancement of equality for the LGBTQ community and remains committed firmly against discrimination of any kind. During her campaign for re-election to the Florida legislature in 2014, her entire campaign staff identified as members of the LGBTQ community. I should know I was one of them. She has worked alongside Equality Florida during her time in the Florida legislature and now as a School Board member to secure workplace protections that prevent an employer from firing employees for their sexual orientation or gender/non-gender conforming identity.

Rep. Geraldine Thompson

Representative Geraldine Thompson remains a powerful voice in the Florida legislature. As a member of Equality Florida, Orange County residents and Floridians need the continued allyship of Geraldine Thompson in Tallahassee as a supportive voice for the reforms necessary to advance equal rights for LGBTQ Floridians. Representative Thompson has also been outspoken in her support for a national memorial to Pulse nightclub, where 49 angels lost their lives on June 12, 2016, in an attack on Orlando’s LGBTQ community.

Commissioner Emily Bonilla

Commissioner Emily Bonilla has worked with the Zebra Coalition as County Commissioner. She will continue to work with and support other LGBTQ groups in Orange County to ensure the LGBTQ community in Orange County is not overlooked. She is a fighter for equal rights for everyone and considers herself very much an ally to the LGBTQ community.

It is with great elation that the Rainbow Democrats offer our endorsement of these three women who remain committed to defending the rights of LBGTQ Floridians in each of their elected positions.
